SMTP 535 5.7.3 Authentication unsuccessful error on Exchange server 2003

by APIJunkie 11/7/2007 11:52:00 AM

If you receive this error and have exhausted all other recommended options from Microsoft and other sources on the web then you might have stumbled upon the same unknown exchange feature/bug that we suffered from.

After doing some digging around it seemed that when we installed exchange it did not set permissions properly on some of the existing users. So some users could not authenticate against the SMTP server even though it seemed like they had the exact same permissions and SMTP settings as other users that could authenticate.

To solve the problem we had to create new user accounts. New user accounts did not receive the same SMTP error.

To test if you suffer from the same problem just try to create a new domain user account and assign an exchange profile/email address to it. If this user is able to authenticate through SMTP then you found your culprit.

I am trying to send a email with some attachment. Initially I got error auth() is failing because I dont have installed Authen::SASL. After that it is failing with the new error that my friend is mentioning in the above mail. I am not sure that I should create a new account on the exchange server. But It solved my problem really.

Thanks a lot man for confirming this is a bug not a script problem.

This worked for me I was pulling my hair out trying to figure out why my SBS box would not allow my external web application to relay! I made a new user and then bam sure enough it works. Strange very strange.

Had the same issue. I inherited the server from a different company. It had a lot of issues and one of them was this. New users were able to authenticate successfully but old accounts were not able. I am lucky I found your post. I was almost on the edge of pulling my hair out Smile
